Slack

Every new comment in a Slack channel with a screenshot of the spot, kept in step with the comment, and Resolve and Reply right in Slack.

Every new comment lands in a Slack channel with a screenshot of the spot and a link back to it. Replies follow in the message's thread, and the message keeps up with the comment: resolve it, assign it or edit it in layernote and the message in Slack changes too. Your team can reply and resolve right in Slack, without opening layernote.

Slack comes with every plan. You find it on the Integrations page in the sidebar. To send comments to another tool, or to your own server, see Webhooks.

Connect Slack

On the Integrations page, click Connect next to Slack. Slack asks you to allow layernote in your Slack workspace; once you do, the window closes by itself. Then pick a channel under Comments go to.

  • The workspace owner and admins connect and manage Slack. Members link their own Slack account, see Resolve and reply from Slack.
  • A layernote workspace connects to one Slack workspace. Connecting a different one starts over: the channels you picked are cleared.
  • Public channels work right away. For a private channel, add the layernote app to it in Slack first, then pick Refresh channels.

New comments always go to Slack. Under Besides new comments, choose what else does. All three are on to begin with.

SettingWhat it adds
Replies, in the comment's threadEach reply, posted under its comment. Off: replies stay in layernote.
Resolved and reopenedA line in the thread when a comment is resolved or opened again.
AssignmentsA line in the thread when someone is assigned. If they linked their Slack account, Slack notifies them.

The comment's own message always shows its current status and who it is assigned to, whichever of these are on.

Channels per project

New comments go to the channel under Comments go to. Under Per project, give a project a channel of its own, or set it to Off to keep that project out of Slack. A client project can post to the channel you share with that client, while the rest goes to your team channel.

What shows up in Slack

Each new comment is one message with:

  • who wrote it and in which project, linked to the comment. A reviewer from a share link shows as a guest, and a comment an AI app placed, such as Claude, says "via AI".
  • where it is: the page, frame or file, with its version, PDF page or moment in a video, and the device when it isn't desktop.
  • the text, and a screenshot of the spot as soon as it is made.
  • its board column, who it is assigned to and its priority.
  • Open in layernote, Reply and Resolve.

When a comment changes in layernote, its message changes with it: resolved, reopened, moved on the board, assigned, edited. A deleted comment's message says the comment was deleted.

When Claude places several comments at once, Slack gets one summary instead of a message each: who added how many comments, the first five, and a button that opens the project.

Resolve and reply from Slack

Resolve and Reply act in your name, so layernote needs to know who you are in Slack. The first time you click one, Slack shows you a Link my account button that only you can see. It opens layernote: sign in if you need to, check that it names the right account, and click Link account. Then click Resolve or Reply in Slack again; from now on they work as you.

  • Reply opens a short form in Slack. The reply lands in layernote marked "via Slack", and in the Slack thread when replies are on.
  • Resolve resolves the comment as you, and the message updates.
  • Only workspace members can link an account. Reviewers who came in through a share link reply in layernote.
  • To unlink, open Slack on the Integrations page and click Unlink under Your Slack account.
