Folders

Organize projects into a hierarchy.

Folders let you organize your projects into a clear hierarchy. As your workspace grows, folders keep everything structured and easy to find. You can nest folders, assign colors, and share entire folders with your team or external stakeholders.

Creating a folder

Click New folder from your dashboard or right-click in the sidebar to create a folder. Give it a name and optionally assign a color to make it visually distinct. Folders appear in the sidebar alongside your projects.

Nesting folders

Folders can be nested inside other folders to create a hierarchy that matches your team's structure. For example, you might organize by client, then by project phase. Folders can be nested up to three levels deep.

Moving projects into folders

Drag and drop projects from the sidebar into any folder. You can also move projects between folders the same way. If you need to move a project out of a folder, drag it back to the root level of your workspace.

Folder colors

Assign a color to any folder to make it stand out in the sidebar. Colors are purely visual and help you quickly identify groups of related work at a glance.

Sharing a folder

Share an entire folder — and all projects inside it — with a single link. Click the share icon on a folder to generate a share link. Folder sharing supports the following options:

  • Pause and resume — Temporarily disable a share link without deleting it.
  • Revoke access — Remove the share link entirely when it is no longer needed.

You can also share folders with specific workspace members, giving them direct access to all projects in that folder.

When viewing a project inside a folder, breadcrumbs at the top of the page show the full folder path. Click any breadcrumb to navigate back up the hierarchy.

Deleting a folder

When you delete a folder, layernote shows you exactly what will be affected — including all projects and nested folders inside it. This helps you avoid accidentally removing work. Projects inside a deleted folder are not permanently lost and can be recovered.
